The Speakeasy Party: Tim Penn and the Second Line

“Scintillating piano-based artistry” from Tim Penn and The Second Line for New Orleans Blues and Jazz at The Speakeasy Party

Tim Penn is one of the most ‘in demand’ keyboard players on the roots, songwriter & blues scenes. Going back to the 1970s, he was a member of Twickenham legend Dorris Henderson’s Eclection and also the Kevin Coyne band alongside Andy Summers (The Police) and Gordon Smith (Described by John Peel as ”The foremost white Blues guitarist in the world “.

Cooking up a hot gumbo of New Orleans R&B, Tim Penn brings the sounds of the American Deep South to RJR with his band The Second Line.

The band draws on the music of Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Dr John, Allen Toussaint and then stirs it up with a pinch of Ray Charles, Tom Waits and Tim’s own original compositions, a recipe that has led to a string of sold out shows in London over the last few years. In Tim’s own words,

“This is the blues, but with a great big smile on its face”. Over the last few years, The Second Line has firmly established its reputation as one of the top New Orleans R&B bands in London. If you like the Crescent City’s rich heritage of Rhythm and Blues mixed in with a nod back to the Jazz greats like Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton then this is one band you won’t want to miss.
